xfree86

Hi,
I was having kinda a bad day yesterday, so i decided to wipe my linux drive and start over with the new mandrake 9, but i think i messed up my x server configuration. I selected the geforce4 (generic), my NEC MUltiSync M700, the experimental 3d server and a resolution of 1024x768 @ 24 bpp.
When i go to start x from the console, i get the following errors:
SVGA: 24bpp not suported for this chipset.
***A configured device found, but display modes could not be resolved ***
Fatal server error: no screens found

What do i need to change in the XF86Config-4 (or any other) file to fix this problem? Should i post the contents of my config file?

I searched the forums, and found a bit, but not enought to help me, although i probably missed somthing (i'm using text based lynx ). If so, could you please post a link?

Thanks much

Change DefaultDepth value in Section "Screen" to the lower value (possibly 16)

That's the 3D thing you applied, it is probably comes from XFree86-3.3.6, I'd recomend to get XFree86-4.x and get the Detonator Drivers from NVIDIA http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=li...splay_1.0-3123
Hold on a sec, you said you used XF86Config-4 that means that XFree86-4.x is already used, so get the drivers from NVIDIA, read the docs very carefully - you need your kernel source installed.

Yeah, i selected the 3.3.6 experemental 3D one, and i have both the XF86Config and the XF86Config-4 files. They are both the same. Does that make a difference?

Honestly, I have no idea if it does make a difference, probably not, but might be yes, did you try to edit XF86Config file as well?

Yeah, i did.
I'll go to the nvidia website, and download their files and go through the readme. Did I hear right that the rpm's don't work for the geforce 4? Which ones should i get?

Thanks for all your help.

I have no idea about issues between GeForce4 and rpms, to be safe get the source either src.rpm or tar.gz
