XCDRoast: Should it work without SCSI emulation in 2.6???

I've read from various sources that the 2.6 kernel supports cd burning without SCSI emulation enabled in the kernel (for ATAPI cdrw's). I've installed the 2.01alpha23 release of cdrtools, so should xcdroast just automatically work? Or does it work, and I just don't know how to do it without xcdroast to help me out (if, indeed, xcdroast doesn's support this)? When I try to run xcdroast, it takes a long time doing tasks,it gives me a message:

Checking drive for a medium....

Using scsi emulation for that drive would speed up this considerably. Please note that inserting a medium would also reduce the wait time.

Thanks.

I'm running Slackware 9.1 w/ kernel 2.6.1-rc1 and I have not noticed any problems using Xcdroast w/ my laptops cdrw/dvd combo drive. I had to leave scsi emulation in the kernel to use my digital camera's usb connection, but I did not use the ide-scsi option at boot and my cdrw drive is mounted as /dev/hdc.

It is possible that it's slightly slower, but not enough for me to notice.

Also,
I did get the same message the first time I started xcdroast after my kernel upgrade, I would also note that I got an error message from totem (dvd player) about not being able to find my DVD drive the first time I started it up after the kernel upgrade. I had to re-select my dvd drive in totems options menu and now it works fine w/o ide-scsi as well.
