Enabling SCSI emulation for ATAPI CD writer for Xcdroast

Hi all,

I am running Linux version 2.6.9-5.0.5.EL with a TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2212, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive.

I have installed Xcdroast. When I fire it up, I get this message in a pop-up box:

Failed to scan the SCSI-bus. Either no permission to access the scsi devices or no SCSI support enabled in the kernel. For ATAPI devices you have to install the SCSI-emulation first. Please see the CD-Writing-HOWTO how to do that.

Okay, so I understand that I need to enable SCSI emulation for my ATAPI drive. So I attempt to include the following line in my lilo.conf.anaconda file:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.0.5.EL
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.9-5.0.5.EL.img
read-only
root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
append="hdc=ide-scsi" <<<------------NEWLINE
append="rhgb quiet"

Because hdc is the cd writer. I reboot. Xcdroast still gives the same error. Here is my /etc/fstab file:

# This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 /mnt/stick auto noauto,owner,user,exec 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole,fscontext=system_ubject_r:removable_t,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

I attempt to use the following command (as root):
cdrecord -dev=ATAPI -scanbus

and get this:

Cdrecord 2.0 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jg Schilling
scsidev: 'ATAPI'
devname: 'ATAPI'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
Warning: Using ATA Packet interface.
Warning: The related libscg interface code is in pre alpha.
Warning: There may be fatal problems.
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.

All these problems have appeared after reinstalling scientific linux from FC3. Xcdroast worked fine under FC3.

I'd appreciate any and all help! Many thanks in advance,

Nick

you might need to recompile the kernel.

Okay...I have never recompiled the kernel. Can you recommend a set of safe instructions to follow for doing this? What is the point of recompiling the kernel in this case? Apologies for my obvious ignorance.
