X makes monitor shut off

hi, i just installed slackware 9.1 (which i was very excited about when it came out, i was waiting since the beginning of the month) and now that i have it installed when i startx my monitor goes into standby mode as if the tower had lost power. it's still on and if i hit ctrl+alt+backspace to end the X session the monitor comes back on and displays the terminal. i have a GeForce FX 5200 card. any ideas guys?

Have you checked the XF86Config file, and put it on the lowest resolution already? Also have a look at the Mhz it might to load ...

Hope this helps,

The monitor does that when you have it set on the wrong settings, so it won't destroy itself like older monitors used to. Check your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and your monitor manual to make sure you aren't trying to do something the monitor can't do.

yeah, thanks for your input. i knew that my monitor would shut off if i had the horizontal and vertical frequencies set wrong so i changed that in my XF86Config (before i posted here). that didn't work. but then i got the proper driver for my video card from nvidia and that worked. thanks again.
