APM monitor shut off/closing lid and not suspending

I'm having tons of problems with power management at the moment...the reason being that I want to run my laptop as a server. Right now, when I shut the lid, it powers down, and I have searched high and low for a solution, but have not found it. I tried ACPI, only to discover that my PCMCIA doesn't work, and that my motherboard is on the blacklist for ACPI. My last option, since I can't figure out the closing of the lid, is to have an automatic shutoff, or just a command that turns of my LCD monitor. Does anyone know how to do this with APM? I'm using Gentoo with Xorg-x11.
