X/Gnome control files

I want to customize my desktop, like when it starts up. Is there a site that has what control file to modify?
I'm running Red Hat 9 and Gnome GUI.

What do you like to customize?
Most likely you will have to modify multiple config-files.

Yea, that's why I'm looking for a list or how to guide that will outline what files need to be modified, for specific tasks.
I want to add programs to run automatically when I log in, I want certian paths available, and to have some variables in the environment available too.
Any suggestions?

Most of that could be entered in the .bashrc and .bash_profile found in your homedirectory.

Possibly, but I tried it a while ago, and it has a different effect that I'd like. Every time I open a terminal a program will run, I don't want that, I want it to run at login, when Xwin/Gnome starts.

Still looking for Xwin/Gnome customization info.
