windows installer files with wine

I'm tring to use wine for the first time, and it actually worked on a "standalone executable" (for lack of a better term), right out of the box surprisingly, but i'm tring to run a windows installer file and it freezes (as i excepted) will tring to install. I'm guessing that i have to extract the sourcecode, or something from the installer file, but i'm not sure what. If anyone has used wine, please fill me in or point me in the right direction.
