Were you root when you tried to run urpmi? If not, then you would not have been permitted to access the urpmi database because of permission issues.

You can only use urpmi if you are root. You need to switch to root using "su -" and then run urpmi.

In a terminal e.g. Konsole or gnome-terminal. Alternatively you can just run the Mandriva Control Center and use the GUI software tools.

Can you post exactly what you entered in the terminal. It should be as simple as starting a terminal, entering the command "su -" (without quotes) and then entering the urpmi commands you want.

You first enter
Code:
su -
You will then be asked for roots password. Once you have successfully entered roots password and the system shows roots command prompt, you can then enter the commands you wish to run as root.

Do it from the Software section in the Mandriva Control Center. There is a section there for updates.
