Which fonts for internet browsing

I've tried a number of different combinations of fonts for web browsing, but I'm not really satisfied with the results. Which fonts do you use (name, size) for optimum results
(I have access to windows fonts, but haven't installed them on my system yet)

My preferences (to make it look like Windows):

Proportional: Serif.
Serif: Times New Roman
Sans Serif: Arial
Monospace: Monospace (or Courier. Courier New is too thin and light)

Regular size would be 12pt. 96 dpi as your screen resolution would be nice at 1024x768, but try 72 dpi if you're using 800x600.

If you want to install Windows fonts, try dragging them into the fonts folder (fonts:///) in Gnome or using the font installer on KDE 3.2.x's Control Centre. There's a manual way to do it, but I'm not sure.

thnx I used the gnome installer, but I suppose I'll have to restart the font server (remember reading as much but don't know how to - will be OK after reboot)

Which fonts do you use for your desktop (general, fixed width, toolbar, etc.)?

Oh yes, restart X or restart the comp if you have to.

As for the desktop, Sans is a good font to use generally, and is default in Fedora, RedHat and Mandrake distros, AFAIK. I simply use the defaults, but you can try other fonts if you like. Eg, Helvetica, Arial, Times, Times new Roman, Verdana or Tahoma. Use Verdana or Tahoma (better) if you want a Windows feel. But remember you can only use Tahoma and some MS fonts only on a computer with Windows.

While you're at it, you might consider trying different themes.

just want to add 1 thing guys
if you are talking about internet browsing
that website can override ur default font
with the following code

font-family: arial;

using CSS

provided you have that font installed on your system. If not it will look for the most similar font. Is there a way of indicating preference within font families to linux? (or am I way out there?

i would say Trebuchet MS or Times New Roman
