Where to install Firefox so it shows up. (noob)

I have only been using Linux (Linspire 5.0.59) fo a day now.

I just downloaded firefox and (I think) installed it.

The only problem is that i don;t see any icon to run it.

I installed it to /usr/local/bin/firefox.

When I go to the folder and open the file called "firefox" nothing happens.

When I open it with the program "Kate" Firefox will open along with Kate.

But now after i restarted it didn't work.

I'm thinking there is a much easier way to install things and possibly get an icon on the desktop. If anyone out there knows anything I would be glad to hear it.

by default it installs to /usr/local, you could leave it where it is and make a symlink for the executable in /usr/bin and it will work just fine...
