hello, i have ubuntu and redhat 9.0 and neither plays mp3s, can anybody tell me where can i get the codecs to play mp3 files? don't say "go to xmms.org" cause the site doesn't work.
i really need the codecs cause i can't stand working on the computer without music. please help asap.
i mostly use ubuntu, and please let me know if i can install rpm's on this distro.
thanks

Although it is possible to use RPMs on a Debian-based distribution, it's a very bad idea. Just use the Debian repositories. If something isn't in the Debian Universe repositories, a manual compilation/installation from the command line has a greater probability of success than third-party RPM support ever will have.
Oh, and you might consider upgrading RedHat 9.0 to Fedora sometime
is mplayer the default music player? because i have totem and it doesn't even play videos.
should i install amarok or another music player? also if i install xmms, do i get the codecs to play mp3s? cause if yes, then that'll be the easiest solution
i have not completely known your meaning.
do you want a play that can play your vidio and audio.
if do this ,mplayer can do that ,xmms is very cool play for mp3,and itis website is well,
you can download software ,refer to its reame, and INSTALL
good lucky
For video, I strongly recommend using Kaffeine. For audio, I keep coming back to XMMS. Once you've installed all the codecs we've pointed you to these other programs will work with the shared libraries. If you feel unsatisfied with XMMS, Kaffeine, etc. you can just install something else and see how you like it. The only change will be in the frontend - the shared libraries serving as the backend actually playing music won't change.
i think i can follow your instructions and get mplayer to play mp3s and dvds now, but first i gotta wait for someone to answer my thread on "how to add a partition to the linux system" because i have about 200 megas left of space and i dare not add more programs to my ubuntu partition. i have a 3 gig partition but i don't know how to use it to store new programs and personal files (not porno by the way, lol, i got that on my xp partition).
thanks again. if i can't get it to work in a few days i'll post again.
