Mp3 and Video Codecs?

Ok, I have some problem. I can't play Mp3 or Movies in my newly installed SUSE 10.0 Dist. I've heard that due to some copyright shit the dist itself can't contain codecs so you have to download them yourself or download and install the program you wan't to use. For the Mp3 I wan't to use amaroK and for the videos it doesn't really matter but Kaffein seems nice.

So how do I do? Where do I get these codecs or whatever the problem is? Please help me! And I am pretty n00bie

I believe SUSE has a copywright problem with .mp3 and you need to update the multimedia package... I don't believe they have any problems with video but I could be wrong...

A notation here: I would not install a Linux distro that had any of these copywrite issues... it's bogus and they are just being wimps... get a real Linux Distro that does not comply with the burocratic crap...

Just a thought...

Hi! Try to read my post. I've just been saved from the same problem. But I must tell you that it is Slackware-specific thread and you'll have to filter that according to the fact that you are using Suse. I don't think that Slackware build scripts will be useful for Suse but at least you'll find the names of those codecs and dvd-libraries for further googling.

Good luck!

If you look in our SUSE/NOVELL forum, there are articles that may help you resolve the multimedia issue.
