what might influence the sound volume? apart from mixers etc. - hear (almost) nothing

yesterday i was using skype with a friend, writing my messages while listening to him. today i bought a headset - but don't hear anything from it. i connected active speakers and now i'm able to hear something [edit: very silent!!], when volume is screwed up to maximum.
what did i do in between? i ran realplayer, that's all. i checked all my sound-preferences, volume is at maximum (while "master" has no influence on the volume, in opposition to "pcm").
what can i do? what is the problem? i read about someone having the same kind of trouble in fc; not knowing how to fix it.

best regards
ungua

I've read that some sound cards have bugs that make ports being switched. So for example, your sound may come out of line-in, instead of headphone...
Look at your sound-module information:

as root? i spent some while in front of my control center yesterday and found about nothing. but somehow i came deeped into a hardware-configuration something and a small button says "sound" (at least "lautstærke" in german). there were some values turned down to zero. very strange though that not all sound values are listed in kamix!! any logical reason for that fact available?

thanks for helping anyway! (skype works just fine now)

best regards
ungua, slightly becoming a suse-fan...
