Rep:
What ftpd-server should I use?
Hi,
I'm using Proftpd, but I am not happy with it.
There is lot of ftp-servers out there, my question is; Which one is the best?
I want it to be simple, reliable and secure. Most important is that it is reliable as I have scripts dumping things on the ftp-server all the time, so I do not want it to crash, ever:-)
Please share your experience.
Kindly Regards,
/Johan
Does it have to be Linux? Because I use a ftpd-server which came inbuilt with FreeBSD and it works like a charm. I can't say how secure that actually is, since I use it only on my home network (it can be accessed from "outside", I just don't need to do it... yet...), but it's by far the easiest ftp server I have ever get to run.
Besides, FreeBSD is very known for it's stability and security. If all you want is a ftp-server (and other servers as apache), I'd definitely go with BSD in this one

thanks but it has to be linux, I am running debian
PureFTPd is good. For those less experienced, it has utilities for KDE and modules to add on to Webmin. This allows beginners to use the interfaces and then later look at the configuration files and how it changed or assigned permissions, etc. vsftpd is nice, although there is no graphical interface. It's pretty secure as well, but can get frustrating if you're trying to do more complex and specific directives... leading to some hair pulling and patchy bald spots.
My suggestion is to try PureFTPd and if you're not liking it, try vsftpd next.
All goods, but proftpd really a good choice, for years I use it... but it doesn't support utf-8, nonetheless, others don't too, then if you've utf-8 filesystem, proftpd is always a good choice... until you've one which can support utf-8... I'm searching for one but without success.
