Volume control slider / Task Bar

I've got a small problem, and although not a catatrophe, it's annoying. I run Slackware 10 and use KDE, but after all my efforts I can not get a simple volume control on the task bar like in Windows. I set up Kmix to dock in the panel and enable the system tray volume control, but when I click on it - it just opens the mixer. I don't get a simple slide control. I have searched and searched on this, but all I get is what I've already done above, which isn't working. So I'm hoping someone has some other ideas why this isn't working - or can provide an altrnative that I can use.

Gnome's volume control works fine, so I don't think it's a sound setting - but one never knows. I tried to get Gnome's to work in KDE, but haven't been able to get that to work either.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I just uninstalled and reinstalled the alsa driver, but that didn't fix anything. I tried installing a newer driver but can't compile it - and I can't find a Slackware package. This can't be this hard. Is there anyone on Slackware running KDE with the volume control working right.?????

When I used KDE under FC2 (I can't remember what version of KDE it was), I couldn't get that either, but now that I'm using FC3, KMix has that by default. Maybe you simply have to update KDE, or just KMix. I'm using KMix 2.1 in KDE 3.3.1. I bet if you can upgrade KMix, you'll get what you're looking for.
