vlc install error

attempting to install VLC I get the following errors;

Error in file "/usr/share/applications/kde4/kfontview.desktop": "fonts/package" is an invalid MIME type ("fonts" is an unregistered media type)
Warning in file "/usr/share/applications/gnome-nautilus-folder-handler.desktop": usage of MIME type "x-directory/gnome-default-handler" is discouraged ("x-directory" is an old media type that should be replaced with a modern equivalent)
Warning in file "/usr/share/applications/gnome-nautilus-folder-handler.desktop": usage of MIME type "x-directory/normal" is discouraged ("x-directory" is an old media type that should be replaced with a modern equivalent)

Thoughts or suggestions on how to fix this. I running Fedora 13 and I used 'yum install vlc' to install the app.

what is your default desktop
KDE or Gnome ? it looks like both are installed

i take it you do have rpmfusion installed ( free and non-free)
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f13.html
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...a-f13.html#vlc

was this a clean install of 13 or a "preupgrade" or "upgrade" from 12

also have you installed the mstt fonts?
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...a-f13.html#ttf

I have KDE installed, do not have gnome.
This was a clean install of Fedora 13, not an upgrade.
I just downloaded and installed the msttf

My attempt at downloading
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...a-f13.html#vlc
was not successful, like to me to another site that had a link to downloaded an rpm from livna.org but all links are broken. Search with google and bing lead to similar results.

the other link
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f13.html
I was successful at installing the rpm update.

Now what?

when you installed fedora 13 was it from the KDE only dvd ?
http://spins.fedoraproject.org/kde/
if you used the everyday install dvd then something might be busted .
fedora is VERY Gnome centric and some of gnome MUST be installed even if you use KDE

errors normally occur with python scripts ( installed with gnome) not being installed -- that is the most common

and what do you mean by "was not successful"
also livna.org has 1 ONE and only one rpm "libdvdcss" ( legal reasons )

rpmfusion and rpmfusion-nonfree repos need to be installed
as per the instructions
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...a-f13.html#yum
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...l#mediaplayers
"
also if you DID NOT SETUP "sudo" then use " su -"
fedora DOSE NOT set up sudo by default -- for security reasons --
you need to do it if you want to use it
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...-f13.html#sudo

When I installed Fedora it was a Gnome/KDE dvd.

By unsuccessful I mean when I went to site
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mj...l#mediaplayers
and followed the instructions to install the following rpm's.
mirandam@charon ~]$ sudo rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release.rpm
[mirandam@charon ~]$ sudo rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-livna

When I attempted to download these two files they both error out, first one errors out with the following message;
Quote:
curl: (6) Could not resolve host: rpm.livna.org; Cannot allocate memory
error: skipping http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release.rpm - transfer failed
second one errors out with;
Quote:
error: /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-livna: import read failed(-1).
Followed the link provided and set up sudo, I have been using su but thought it was about time to do it and instructions were clean and simple enough to follow, thanks.

After updating the rpmfusion-free and nonfree I did a yum update which yielded 96 updates from these repos. I then did a yum remove and install of vlc but it yielded the same errors as previously documented.

What two files livna has ONLY ONE RPM and one rpm only -libdvdcss

for vlc you install rpmfusion and rpmfusion-nonfree repos
and livna ONLY for dvd playback using libdvdcss
and livna might be "down" from time to time

The livna has been consistently down for the last week and I have tried at least once a day if not several times a day.

In the mean time I found a program called easylife that aims to install programs for Fedora making it simpler installing proprietary software such as flash, sun java, and fonts among others.

http://easylifeproject.org/

This program also attempts to use livna repo but has the same issue, errors out. But it at least solved my issues.

Thanks for the help Johnvv
