VirtualBox Windows 8.1 install

We couldn't verify the product key. Please check your installation media.

I am running ubuntu mate.

Tried a newer iso. The key worked on a real install last time i used it.

Are you sure your network is configured properly in VirtualBox? The install may be trying to verify the key. Usually NAT works as long as it's enabled in the settings for the VM.

Alternatively, if it's a often-used key and, let's say, not legitimately purchased, it might be possible that they're blocking use of the key since they're aware of it.

Those are largely guesses. If it is legitimate and everything else is configured properly you may need to contact Microsoft.

I admit I know nothing about Windows, but I read stuff on the net. Isn't it possible when you used the key it got married to the hardware?

That actually happened with my laptop. I was able to reinstall win8.1 without key.

I purchased a key online and never needed to use it until now.

I was given multiple keys and was using the wrong one apparently.

Install is working fine now.
