Video encoding in Linux


Hi, when i was using windoz i had a variuos amounts of programmes to encode all my videos to various formats, and convert them to dvd's and s/vcd's. Now in linux i have been unable to find any to do this.
Anybody do this a lot? and what programmes are best for the job???

you're not looking too hard huh? i recommend mencoder for everything, it's great. although transcode is popular too. I wrote acidrip, a gui for mencoder for dvd ripping, you might find that handy.
