Encoding Video Files help

Hey people,

I have a question about encoding a video file using Avidemux. (Don't worry this is strictly above board. I don't pirate and I don't steal. I simply want to make a back up copy of some of favorite VHS tapes. They only last so long you know.)

Anyway I used the xvid input on my Pinnacle Capture card and the record function on Xatv to get the video into a digital format on my computer. I used the MS Raff format to rip it to an AVI file (A huge one at that. Over 20GB). But it caused a descrepancy between the audio and video timing. I tried to use Avidemux to reduce the size of the file and correct the descrepancy. I used the xvid4 codec and the lame mp3 codec for the encoding and used the default setting to correct the lag in the file. But it failed.

Is there anything I can do? Use a different utility? A different setting somewhere? Something I am not thinking of.

Regards,
CMF

I've been having really good luck digitizing VHS with "Mencoder" (MPlayer).
I capture through the coax in with the "lavc" encoder, which I believe is
standard mpeg4 by default. (divx compatable)

This is the comand I use:

mencoder -endpos 02:05:00 -oac lavc -lavcopts acodec=mp3 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vbitrate=2400 -tv driver=v4l:norm=ntsc:channel=03:chanlist=us-cable:adevice=/dev/dsp:width=640:height=480 -o atzoo.avi tv://

This is a high bitrate avi at 640x480.
It is about 1gig per hour.

You can open this file in "Avidemux" and whatever you want with it.

There is an online version of the "man" pages at the "MPlayer" website.

You can poke through there to see if it will do what you want.
