Video Editor like Premier or Photoshop?

Hi folks!

My son is capturing AVI's and taking JPG's with a digital camera, and cutting and pasting the photos to make cool pictures.

One thing he would like to do is create a movie where he makes a Lightsabler in each frame.

I'm thinking he will have to edit frame by frame in Gimp, or something like it. He's ready to do that.

What suggestions would folks have?

Given an AVI, you could convert it to a sequence of JPG images using mplayer's "-vo jpeg" option (see the man page!), edit the appropriate images with the Gimp, and then use mencoder to turn the sequence of JPG images back into an AVI.

Must admit that I've never tried this myself, though!

Kino (easy to use) and Cinelerra (very high end and might be a little out of your sons league - no offence). Lives and Avidmux would be two other ones you might want to look at.
