upgrading GNOME in FC1

What effect does upgrading GNOME have on the filesystem, theme preferences, etc. I'm kind of scared about trying something so seemingly huge, as I recently went through a ton of problems when I tried updating my kernel. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

PS, I'm still a newbie, so the most lamen-esque language possible would be great

when you upgrade Gnome or KDE it does not change the filesystem, theme, or anything like that. you would not notice any changes actually. the best way to upgrade is through apt-get ... do you have it installed?

if you do, in a terminal window just enter the following...

apt-get update
(it will update the list of software from the mirrors you have chosen)
apt-get upgrade
(this will use the new software list to upgrade everything that needs to be upgraded.. and dont worry its totally safe)
