unable to restart IExplorer (via wine) after closing it, Favorites not appearing
I installed IE 6.0 with ies4linux on Ubuntu Desktop. After closing IE6, I am unable to restart it after calling IE via command line or by clicking on the desktop icon, without restarting my computer. When I run ps -a I can see IExplorer.exe running but no browser appears. The same with IE 5.5. Is there something I have to configure?
I also have difficulty with the "Favorites" menu in IE under Wine. I can only bookmark urls by creating them in the default "Links" folder they provide. Otherwise, the Favorite does not appear in the drop-down menu. Nor does it appear if I create another folder or rename the Links folder. Is this a bug in IE on Wine? Or is this related to a problem in the installation?

IE 5.5 and 6 are both old.
But why do you WANT to use IE at all? You have Firefox, Konqueror, and Opera all available natively under Linux, and all of them are far better than IE.

That is a non-answer and I am not that ignorant! But as a public fyi, I need IE for a common reason i.e. to access a website that only works for IE. Or more commonly, many web developers would also like to be able to test that their websites work in IE. So even if you know a work-around for IE only websites, I would still like to have IE available.
Specifically, on this website some features (i.e. window pops up with interactable map) have only been implemented for IE. The website says specifically that IE 6 or higher is required.
It is reported that newer versions of IE do not work well in Wine i.e. IE 8 is garbage

Also, Wine exists for a reason as well but I won't go into that..

Well, I don't know what you know, so I can't assume. That's no reason to be rude. I asked why you needed IE at all, and you could have just answered.
I know IE8 is garbage, and IMO, so are any other versions of IE. The fact that you can write code for ANY browser and have it work, but need special handling for IE says it all. When you have the iexplorer process running, you can issue a "kill -9 <that process ID>", and that will let you restart IE after you close it. It's not closing cleanly, which could be either IE or Wine related. I'd check the Wine docs and forums, and see if there's anything mentioned, but a kill -9 will let you restart.
As for the links, I'd say that's an IE issue. Chances are, Microsoft put some hooks into IE (since it's so tightly integrated with the OS), to let the links 'migrate' to other apps/dlls/whatever, and without finding those things available, it's failing.

Yep...it's there to help people do things that Linux can't duplicate (Turbotax? Quicken?), natively.
