Restart X without closing programs

Is there a way to make XFree86 reread it's config files and restart without having to log out of GNOME? I'm using TV-OUT to run MythTV on my television, and would like to be able to turn that output on and off without having to close all my open programs, since it does seem to slow down my computer a bit.

There isn't a way to do that that I know of but you could start a second X server with the alternate config file.
