unable to edit id3 tags in rhythmbox

Hi,
1) Why is mp3 support illegal? I thought the whole point of mp3 was that it is free to encode, decode and distribute?

2) I have successfully installed rpm's for xmms and rhythmbox to play some sensible formats...

- but xmms doesn't have id3 support and rhythmbox won't let me edit id3s.
I am logged in as root and the files have write permission - is this just a feature the software lacks?
If so is there an update?

Thanks.

MP3 is NOT free, it's just that no one pays the licencing fees like they should, a good FREE audio compression format is OGG/Vorbis.

XMMS doesn't have ID3 tag support? It does on my Slackware system, have you tried the non-bundled version of it? (xmms.org)

PS I didn't get Rythmbox to edit MP3s either when I had it, it's a pretty useless program in my opinion.
