ulimit -n


Hi im a complete noob to shell commands but here is my problem i have a dedicated server i7 with 24 gig ram i have whm/cpanel on it now ive added a minecraft system to root but i cannot set the server to more than 512mb memory i was told its because the memory is being blocked and was told to do this ulimit -a the guy says its limited to 1024 and thats why i cannot make the program run on more memory please really need help as so far this has cost me alot of money and still not right many thanks and again im totally new to this world

i dont understand any of this but if someone could really help me please i have msn ,skype


like i said it will run at 512mb but if i set it to 1024 it just sits there hanging

ulimit -n is "open files", so it does not have anything to do with memory.
AFAIK, minecraft is java, so you set the max memory with a -Xmx1024m parameter to the java command...?
