In the last couple of weeks, I have tried SuSE10.1, Debian 3.1 rc2 and now, Kubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) and I have never had this mouse problem.
Randomly, although more frequently when I open up/switch windows/applications the mouse moves across my screen really fast and always ends up in the top right corner of my screen. Sometimes, the right mouse button will be clicked, etc and I don't know why.
I haven't done anything to my mouse configuration and everything else is set to autodetect.
You can try doing a sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and try setting the mouse section differently to see if it works. Or pop a Knoppix CD and copy the xorg.conf file and see what the mouse section looks like. Then you can modify the Kubuntu xorg.conf file...
Are you by chance using a dell laptop with the little red/purple mouse "stick" in the center of the keyboard? I had a friend bring me this dell that the mouse had developed similar behavior. After calling Dell, it turned out to be a well known manufacturing defect, of which replacing the keyboard/stick would fix temporarily, but the problem would come back. Since she didn't ever use the "stick", I just opened the laptop and unplugged it and it solved the problem.
My Dell laptop does have the mouseball/blue ball in the middle of my keyboard. It also has a mousepad but I am not using either. I have a USB mouse plugged into my docking station.
I think I will try to reconfigure my mouse as I really didn't pay attention to it the first time (I just did auto-detect).
Is there any way to turn off the mousepad and mouseball to see if that eliminates the problem?
Maybe you can turn it off with the xorg.conf file, but it might change whenever you reboot and it autodetects the mouse. The mousepad itself was fine in my case, it was just that stupid little stick...
