Unhappy Ubuntu 10.10 Hangs !! How many DVD is needed for Debian 6 ??

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my dell Vostro 1014 laptop (Core2Duo @ 2.0 GHz, 2GB Ram). Amazingly it just hangs time to time. Sometime in shell when I type it does not respond immediately. Can this problem be solved? As far as linux is concerned I am a novice and thus opted for a easy to use distro (thats true for this Ubuntu). I could opt for Debian 6 just did not understand how many installation DVD I need to download. Any suggestion on Debian 6 (Stable)?

Thanks on advance !

I think you need just one like Ubuntu. Everything else will be installed from network servers.

You can install Debian 6 (Squeeze) from the first DVD and have a fully functioning system as long as you don't need non-free-firmware. If you need non-free-firmware Debian can take a little bit of fiddling to setup but you will still end up with a system that uses less resources and is rock solid stable.
