IDE DVD drive and SATA 3.0 hard drive not detected on Debian/Ubuntu install

Hello, all. I recently built a new desktop system, and I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu installation kernels to recognize my DVD drive and (more importantly) my hard drive. I have tried using debian-503-amd64 installation DVD and netinstall via USB drive, and also the Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64 install DVD. The relevant hardware I'm using is an ASRock P55 Extreme mobo, Intel i5, Samsung Spinpoint F3 1GB, and an older DVD drive (purchased around 2003) with an IDE connection to the mobo. I opened a shell during the Debian install and obtained the following output:

I have also tried appending 'generic.all_generic_ide=1 ircpoll' to the boot parameters, and the system hangs on boot-up. The two drives you se in syslog (sda and sdb) are not the drive I want to install the operating system to. One is a USB drive (4 gig) and the other is an external hard drive for storage. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I am more than willing to run any tests or divulge whatever information you want about the system.

update

I have found a way so that the hard drive can be seen by the install. For anyone else having problems, I went into the BIOS under Advanced->Storage Configuration and changed SATA Operation Mode to ACHI (previously IDE).

I am still currently seeking a solution for my DVD drive.

The BIOS again...

Is the DVD recognized by the BIOS and does it show on the screen at POST? Have you checked that you have set the DVD jumper for the cable connection? Are all the cables correctly installed?

Can you boot a linux live-cd and an installation DVD from the drive?

the DVD drive

The dvd drive is recognized by the bios, and a Linux live CD will boot, but will eventually crash when it takes over control of reading the DVD (loading the kernel). The windows installer had no problem with it, and it works fine in Windows 7. I've used the DVD drive in an older desktop, and it works with Debian/Slackware/Windows XP. I have a feeling it has to do with the motherboard, but not sure where to take it from there.
