trying to record guitar on ubuntu 10.10

im currently trying to have the capability to record myself playing guitar. I have already installed rakarrack and its little extra application jack control. i have already became a member of the audio and the other thing i had to do in order to make the jack control work. i also installed audacity to be the recording application to run directly from rakarrack. the way i have it set up is my mic 1 to rakarrack's "in" 1 & 2. then, once i open audacity a new folder opens called port audio or something and i take THAT folder and connect it to rakarracks "out" 1 & 2 and connect rakarracks out 1 & 2 to the playback (speakers) 1 & 2. and for some reason im getting no response from audacity because its not recording...either that or its not getting anything from rakarrack... im horribly confused as to what ive done here. if ANYONE can help it wouldbe astronomically appreciated....also if you could have followed that spider web of connections through the system, rakarrack, audacity, mics, and speakers you truely are awesome

Well, there are a lot of points at which something could be going wrong.
When you say Audacity doesn't record, does it record silence (flat line) or not start recording at all?
Can you record the microphone directly with Audacity?
Can Rakarrack hear the mic?
Does your mixer program / volume control show that the mic is working?

it just records silence....flat lines completely....it does start the recording process

well im using a guitar, not a mic, i just have the adapter to make my guitar fit into the mic jack. but regardless audacity doesn't record directly from the mic jack...not sure if its supposed to...but it doesn't

im not sure if rakarrack can hear me at all... no sound comes out of the speakers and rakarrack is supposed to have moving things...kinda like the line in audacity...the more sound there is the more this "level" should move....and it doesnt...so im not sure if its rakarrack thats not hearing me or audacity..

the mic volume is at full blast. the program doesnt say anything about the mic not being there. but i assume if there was no mic jack control would give me some kind of notification or error message like "cannot read jack" or "there's no jack in port"...or am i assuming too much of jack control?

do you think i need to plug the guitar into the amp before it goes to the laptop?...

I use a line 6 product to fix the impedance deals. I tend to use audacity. What kind of sound input do you have and does it work with a mic?

He is talking about something like this - http://line6.com/podstudioux2/

I have the Line 6 HD100, with Russian made JJ Tesla tubes.... On my head, I have a seperate output to go directly into my mixer. I don't need to rig stuff up like you are

I did mean the pod or ux2 stuff but other companies have similar products. There are corp769 says any number of ideas to use. Basically you need to match the type of input with the output of your guitar. Some guitars even have usb. You may need to know about impedance.
Some of the guys at work use recorders that can record internally or to a flash card. Some use good quality mics even.

I use this to record in the house.

As you can see there are lot of products listed for that task.

In any case I suggest you try for quality recordings now. It does make a difference.

I can't even crank up my fender blues jr in the house.
