Trouble with GLIB librarys

Hi there.
Im runing Debian 3.0 r2 distribution, on an Athlon xp system.
My problem is, when im instaling a set of utilitis like Pango (for installing GAIM messenger), in the Configure process, it says that requires GLIB libraries 2.0 at least. The problem is, that i already installed the Glib 2.4.2 libraries, using configure, make, and make install for the packet. But it seems that all the others packs that need Glib, they dont find it in my system. It says that i should try to set manually the path of Glib, but i didnt know even how to do that.
Help would be apreciated.. Thanks for reading me
