Trouble installing Java, need help.

Want to load and install Java. Have downloaded the program, but am prompted to choose an application to open the Java program. Can anybody help a brother with little/no programming ability? Need some elementary help.

Have only used Windows on applications that are not compatible with Linux. That is a grand total of one program! I am simply following as a disciple of Linus Torvald's dream of tapping into the open source OS community. The only problem is that I cannot write code. I have an Intel i3 processor with a Gigabyte Motherboard (Model GA-H55M-S2H), 4 GB Ram, 1 TB HD, a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10.

Thank you for reminding and directing me to the software center. I have followed the directions to a tee, but have failed to succeed in the install.
Below is my latest attempt. Can anybody make sense of this? If not, I will keep trying for a little while, and I do loathe going to Windows. I am between a rock and a hard place. Need some assistance!

Thanks.

dada@dada-H55M-S2H:~$ sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jre
[sudo] password for dada:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
openjdk-6-jre : Depends: openjdk-6-jre-headless (>= 6b20-1.9.9-0ubuntu1~10.10.2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libgif4 (>= 4.1.4) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libaccess-bridge-java-jni but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: ttf-dejavu-extra but it is not going to be installed
sun-java6-jre : Depends: sun-java6-bin (>= 6.26-1maverick1) but it is not going to be installed or
ia32-sun-java6-bin (>= 6.26-1maverick1) but it is not installable
Recommends: gsfonts-x11 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
dada@dada-H55M-S2H:~$ apt-get -f install
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
dada@dada-H55M-S2H:~$ sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre
