Tomcat 5: jsvc vs basic catalina
Hi,
I'm installing Tomcat on a small webserver. The load will be quite low, so I don't want to install an Apache httpd as front-end webserver (unless there are good reasons to do so).
I already followed the following steps:
-download the latest JDK from Sun (1.5, as required for Tomcat 5)
-installed JDK in /usr/java/jdk1.5.0/
-download latest Tomcat 5 version
-unpacked tomcat (.tar.gz) in a separate directory.
Now, my problem is that there seem to be 2 ways of launching Tomcat:
-Copying the tomcat/bin/catalina.sh script to /etc/init.d and then
using chkconfig to make it un at reboot.
-Using jsvc:
*compiling and installing jsvc from the src tarball included with Tomcat
(directory tomcat/bin/jsvc-src/)
*making a tomcat.sh script that can be put in /etc/init.d for
starting/stopping tomcat, based on the script tomcat/bin/jsvc-
src/native/Tomcat5.sh, as specified on the Tomcat homepage, in the docu
for Tomcat 5. Again, the script in /etc/init.d can be configured by chkconfig
to make it run at reboot.
My Linux is Fedora 3.
I was wondering what the difference is between both approaches. Both are included in the distro of Tomcat, so it's not clear to me which is best.
But then again, I'm just a newbie to Linux...
