Your post looks almost like a little poem.

There is a program called GNU Privacy Guard, (gpg) which is a free software implementation of the pgp functions. gpg itself is a command line utility, but there are a couple of GUI front ends to it. If you use KDE, you can use kgpg as a front end, and the kmail email client has very nice gpg integration.

Almost every program you install will come with documentation. gpg has a manual - just type "man gpg" in a terminal, or, if you use KDE, open konqueor and type man:/gpg in the address bar.

The manual is a little dry and reference like, so if you want more of a tutorial, google will tell you. I asked it "gnupg documentation", and it found me this link, which I expect is more helpful than the manual page - at least as a primer.

I use gpg with the enigmail plugin in Thunderbird on both Linux and Windows platforms so I can sign and encrypt email.

The Key Signing Party How-To is a good refernce for quickly learning how to generate and sign keys with an overview of key trust, etc...

Just wanted to point out an additional use for gpg..

another item to look at for windows is GPGee an extension that adds right click sign and encrypt support to windows Explorer.
