thunderbird unable to send mail

on my xp box at my university (

linux one is still at home) i am unable to send mail using thunderbird. this has been going on a week, now.
the error that pops up is

now, is this because of a firewall? if so, how do i get around it?
if not - what can i do?

i tried asking computer support, but after learning i used thunderbird, they would not help me.

Are you using the university SMTP server or your personal, off-campus one (provided by yout home ISP)? Chances are your ISP will only allow sending mail from its own network(s) and that all attempts to send mail using the server from external networks (like your univeristy) is denied. This is very common and more or less good practice.

the smtp server is my personal one (rather, my domain, not the isp i had at home).

Most universities require you to use their SMTP relay. Reconfigure Thunderbird correctly and see if it works then.
