system freezes when blanking cd-rw

hello,
i wonder WHY my system turns completely BLOCKED when i blank a cdrw. there is no way of doing anithing: i cannot even go to another shell (CTRL+ALT+F1) and do la login. please if someone has an explanation i would like to know!

by the way i suppose that:
- it is not a kernel problem: i have tried a lot of kernels, even precompiled or hand-compiled.

- it is not a distribution problem: i have tried a LOT of distros, and always the same problem

- it is (most probably) not be a software problem: i have tried different versions of cdrecord, and also different programs like k3b, graveman or gnomebaker (also tried to blank a cd from the command line) but nothing...

could be a bus connection problem?? these are my devices

/dev/hdb (primary slave) <-- cd recorder
/dev/hdd (secondary slave) <-- cdrom drive

No idea, but sounds like a hardware problem or conflict to me since you've tried it with multiple distributions. I can only suggest running diagnostics on it or trying a different OS altogether for testing purposes.

Does Caps Lock work after it hangs up?

blanking cds on ms windows does not cause freezing. one strange thing:
gnome clock seems to run during the system freeze, it continues showing minutes. Anyway, after finished blanking, the system becomes stable.
