Suse9 and smbfs

I used to connect to a samba server from my SuSe system, but after a kernel update (using the yast online update) I get the "smbfs filesystem not supported by the kernel" error. So they didn't compile it in and I also can't load it as a module:
Code:
izbrio:/home/nyk # modprobe smbfs
modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.21-266-default/modules.dep (No such file or directory)
Is there any way to fix this? Should I maybe just compile my own kernel? Is SuSe going to include it again?

Note that you need to reboot after the kernel update. Otherwise the old kernel is still running, but the modules are the new version already.
