Starting ALSA Mixer

I am running Fedora 9 and I have installed ALSA Mixer.

When I start ALSA Mixer from Applications|Sound and Video I get a window with nothing that I can do.

When I start Sound Recorder, I can go to the File menu and from there I can launch "Volume Control" - which gives me something claiming to be ALSA Mixer. This has the option of selecting the device to be controlled, plus it gives me sliders I can use to adjust volumes.

I would be able to open this latter mixer without having to go through Sound Recorder.

Any ideas?

Ian
