something wrong with make in gentoo

i had slack installed for a while, then i decided i wanted to try other distros out, so i made my way over to gentoo, i see a lot of people on here with it.

so here's my problem. i installed gentoo from the livecd, i had to do a networkless install because the only way i can get an internet connection to that computer is through my linksys wusb11 wireless adapter. i had it working on slackware using the driver from http://at76c503a.berlios.de/ at76c503a-0.13 worked perfect for me.

now i tried installing it the same way with gentoo, but when i do make, i get:
Code:
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r7/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [modules] Error 2
anyone have any ideas?

The build directory is usually a symlink back to the kernel sources. For example, on my system it's:
Code:
$ ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.18.1/build
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 2006-10-17 12:24 /lib/modules/2.6.18.1/build -> /usr/src/linux-2.6.18.1
Do you have your kernel sources installed?

I haven't used Gentoo, but the 2 ways to check would be either to use its package manager to see what kernel packages are installed or to see what is under /usr/src (if there's nothing there, then the sources probably aren't installed.

I don't think you can have a Gentoo install without having kernel sources installed.

Code:
# emerge --search sources
You'll get stuff like "gentoo-sources" "vanilla-sources" etc. See which one is installed from the emerge output.

That's weird. But then again I haven't used Gentoo for some time now, so perhaps things have changed a bit and you can have a sys without having the -sources installed.

May I asked how you performed an install? [The new GUI installer thing? And what did you chose at stuff related to the kernel?]

To install sources, just:

Code:
USE="symlink" emerge gentoo-sources
(linux source+gentoo patches, or if you want vanilla sources

Code:
USE="symlink" emerge vanilla-sources
