Gentoo and my NIC: What's wrong?

Hey,
I just installed Gentoo 2.6 kernel from stage 1 using the minimail live cd. I compiled the kernel manually, not using genkernel. Everything worked great while on the live CD. However, after I got everything working, took out the CD, and booted to the hard drive, my ethernet card refuses to work. When I boot I am greeted with the message:

* Bringing up eth0
* 192.168.0.2
! eth0 does not exist
! ERROR: Problem starting needed services. 'netmount' was not started.

I have been through numerous posts on linuxquestions about similar, or the same problems but no solutions could be found. I am using a NetGear Fast Ethernet Adapter. I believe that I need to use the tulip module to get this to work but I am unable to figure out how to get it to load. In my initial compilation I omitted to include tulip in the kernel. But I recompiled with it, and I still can't get it to work. After I recompile I try to modprobe tulip, but it tells me that tulip cannot be found.

Any help would be much appreciated,

-paco

So in a matter of minutes after posting, I solved my own problem. I needed to compile tulip as a module and not into the kernel.

Thanks,

Hope this solution could be helpful to someone else.
