So I have been searching around for an application that would help me keep a journal on my laptop. All the programs I found dealt with online journals like livejournal. I dont want a blogging type of program, just something to help manage a nice orderly diary/journal on the local machine. All the posts I found dated back to 2003-4 and seemed to be pretty out dated.
Is there any program(s) that some one could recommend which is a nice journal application?
I have found the journal in Kontact very good. Perhaps not as full-featured as you might like, but functional. I know the latest 4 version supports dates, title, rich text (bold, italics, underline, etc...) and categories and templates.
It may be worth checking out...
I would probably setup a folder of word processing files with date and title as the filename, perhaps with months per folder myself, but this might be more what you want, especially with templates?

Thank you I will check out Kontact's journaling. As you mentioned a file structure with dates that is basically what I want. Not so much nice text as I was thinking of using even vi to type my journal. I just was wondering if maybe there was a program that would help and have some simple functions like spellcheck, and would automatically put the file in the correct dated location.
What I was thinking is this if I had to do it manually...
I know some simple programming in C and also am learning how to program in linux maybe I'll make a little project out of this since its will be dealing with just text files. And my preference is CLI not really GUI. Only big problem for me would be spell checking. I'll just do it the manual way for now as I slowly get something going.
I'm not sure about spell check in any command line tools - I think aspell, etc would work, but I do not know how to integrate into vi... but I am sure you can... or emacs might have that built in.
Dates: I would recommend not using the words for months - they do not sort nicely so use:
2008/01/01-My first page for January 1st 2008.txt
or at least use both:
2008/01-Jan/01-First Entry Jan. 1st 2008.txt
a project might be good - do check on sourceforge, etc to see if anything is out there, you may be able to continue a project that has been left to rot?
That sounds like a good idea. Yeah I was not talking about integrating spell check in to VI but for now I would just use VI and manually organize it. Thanks for the advice on the months. Just was to use to seeing 3letter months. The numbers would be better for sorting. Also i will check sourceforge for old projects gone astray.
