I need a very simple SyslogD server for Ubuntu 10.04 so I can get data from a small embedded device I'm trying to get to work.
I tried to install syslog-ng, but it fails after start. It look like I need to edit its configuration file, but all I found through Google are complicated tutorials to install syslog-ng, MySQL, PHP, Apache, etc.
By any chance, does someone have a really simple tutorial on how to get a syslogd server installed in Ubuntu?
All normal linux distributions run a syslog server by default. That's probably why your attempts to run syslog-ng (which is ace btw.) Fail - there's already one running. No idea what it is ubuntu runs normally, but run ps -ef and you'll find it listed.
Thanks for the tip. It seems like there are several syslogd alternatives for Ubuntu, and I tried sysklogd which seems like the simplest... but can't get it to work:
Code:
# apt-get install sysklogd
# vi /etc/default/syslogd: Just edited the single line in the default file as SYSLOGD="-r"
# /etc/init.d/networking restart
# netstat -na
... but no application listens on UDP 514.
Does someone know whether I should add something else to get sysklogd up and running?
For those looking for the same thing: Contrary to what I read in some docs, it's not /etc/init.d/networking that must be used but (logically) /etc/init.d/sysklogd.
Sysklogd comes with default settings in /etc/syslog.conf which are good enough to get started. If you want to allow remote hosts to log data through the network, just edit /etc/default/syslogd.
