I can't find /etc/default/syslogd on this version of Ubuntu

Hi folks,

Ubuntu 10.04 server 64-bit

I was following;
The Perfect Server - Ubuntu Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server) - Page 4
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-se...ntu8.04-lts-p4

to set up the server on Ubuntu 10.04 and encountered the problem on editing /etc/default/syslogd
Code:
# Top configuration file for syslogd
# Full documentation of possible arguments are found in the manpage
# syslogd(8).
#
# For remote UDP logging use SYSLOGD="-r"
#
SYSLOGD="-a /var/lib/named/dev/log"
I couldn't find syslogd on this version of Ubuntu.

$ man syslogd
Code:
No manual entry for syslogd
I wonder whether the process has been changed on this version of Ubuntu OR the file has been re-named

I found;
$ cat /etc/default/rsyslog
Code:
# Options for rsyslogd
# -m 0 disables 'MARK' messages (deprecated, only used in compat mode < 3)
# -r enables logging from remote machines (deprecated, only used in compat mode < 3)
# -x disables DNS lookups on messages received with -r
# -c compatibility mode
# See rsyslogd(8) for more details
RSYSLOGD_OPTIONS="-c4"

Please advise which file shall I edit? TIA

Thumbs up

You're right. Syslog was upgraded to rsyslog since Ubuntu 9.10. So /etc/default/rsyslog was its equivalent to /etc/default/syslog. Furthermore, Configurations in /etc/syslog.conf were automatically migrated to /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.

I also did a perfect server install in Ubuntu 10.04 (lts) running 64bit and I followed this guide:
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-se...nx-ispconfig-2

To avoid much confusion, I would suggest you to follow the above link rather than the Ubuntu 8.04 server tutorial(while running Ubuntu 10.04). As you can see, there are lots of changes with the new lts version. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

I'm building this server on a virtual machine running Oracle VirtualBox. On this virtual machine I was building another server following the link you mentioned and having finished up to;

"If you want to allow FTP and TLS sessions, run" on;
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-se...ispconfig-3-p4

I can resume the installation.

What attracting me turning to Ubuntu 10.04-1 is it is LTS

However my final goal is testing;
How To Set Up A Loadbalanced High-Availability Apache Cluster Based On Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
