segmentation fault...hplip

After doing an apt-get upgrade, my scanner & printers do not work. I used to have both the obsolete hpoj and the current hplip drivers installed but the scanner would only work with the hpoj driver. Took all day but I finally figured out why...driver hpaio (intergal part of hplip) is giving a segmentation fault error...and now the hpoj driver is "busy":
Code:
crashedagain@Desktop:~$ sane-find-scanner
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x2b11) at libusb:001:002

crashedagain@Desktop:~$ scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname Leadtek Winfast 2000XP Expert virtual device
device `test:0' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device
device `test:1' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device

crashedagain@Desktop:~$ scanimage -d hpaio -T
Segmentation fault

crashedagain@Desktop:~$ scanimage -d hpoj -T
scanimage: open of device hpoj failed: Device busy
So, the first question is: how do I solve the segmentation fault? Google seems to indicate that the seg fault is when the program is trying access some memory that it is not entitled to but nowhere can I find anyone who has ever corrected a seg fault error (except for developers while troubleshooting their own code..which is no help, I'm not about to try to rewrite hplip).
I have had some problems with segmentation fault errors in the past with other applications, the eventual result was that I had to install a different version of Linux. Really don't want to have to do that again.

Upgraded Debian Etch system, BTW.

The first step in assessing what/where the problem is occurring
is always to use strace to run a program, see where it dies ...

The contact the maintainer of that product with the output.

Cheers,
