"Segmentation Fault" error message when trying to run Yahoo Messenger on Linux 8.0
hey guys,
some problem when trying to run yahoo messenger on my Linux OS.
Problem Steps:
Downloaded the yahoo messenger rpm and installed the application successfully.
Went to terminal window prompt and typed "ymessenger", it ran successfully for the first two three times. i also connected and had an IM converation successfully.
but now when i type "ymessenger" in the terminal window, it gives me a message saying "Segmentation Fault"
Even when i double click the Yahoo messenger icon, no action at all.
the OS version that i use is RH Linux 8.0
if anybody could guide me through this problem, i would sincerely appreciate that.

Are you sure that the downloaded .rpm file is for your linux distribution? Every Linux distribution has a separate Yahoo Messenger .rpm file. There are separate versions for Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.2, 8.0 and now Red Hat 9 etc. An rpm file meant for Red Hat 7.0 may work on version 7.1....but there's no surety about that.
Just make sure you're using the right ymessenger .rpm file.
Regards,
amit

hey amit,
i appreciate your reply, but i have downloaded the right .rpm file. this is from the yahoo site itself where they have clearly mentioned the Linux version.
this is the URL that i downloaded the file from:
http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/download/unix.html
regards
Niranjan

Hi Niranjan,
I dont think much can be done about the segmentation fault...This problem normally occurs when the application has bugs.
However, you can try out either or both of the options:
1. Install ymessenger on top of the existing install once more.
rpm -Uvh ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm
You can try using the -F option to upgrade the package, if already installed.
OR
2. You can uninstall ymessenger, and then install it again
rpm -e ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm
and then
rpm -Uvh ymessenger-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm
If that dosent solve the problem, hope an LQ Guru will read your problem and come to your aid.
Regards,
amit
