In KDE:
Press "PrintScreen", right-click on desktop, select "paste clipboard contents", choose image format.

To record video use "recordmydesktop".

If you're trying to make a voice annotated movie, you may have to use two computers, with the second one having a video capture card. If you have Nvidia video cards, that will probably force you to use Windows on the capturing machine because Nvidia no longer supports DGA.

You don't have to use two computers. Use recordmydesktop, it can record sound from line-in or mic. Just make sure you have "jackd" installed, and recordmydesktop uses it. Without "jack" audio will be out-of-sync.
