samba setup broken pipe?

I'm a total linux newbie running mandrake 10.1. I'm trying to install samba but really have no idea what I'm doing, I tried running the installation steps located at:
http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Share_files_using_Samba

but when I typed in sudo apt-get install samba
I could get a response back of Broken Pipe

I DL'd the samba package to /home/username/samba
extracted contents to /home/username/samba
then loaded console and moved to /home/username/samba/samba-3.0.22 directly and tried running the command also tried inside the source folder w/ same message.

Please help.
