root on SATA?

I recompiled the 2.6.5 kernel with SATA support for mi chipset (ICH5R), but on boot it says:

VFS: cannot open root device "301" or unknow-block (3,1)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,1)

ok, that seems SATA is not /dev/hda. what is the address? i have the HD on channel0 of SATA

Most likely /dev/hde if you have a traditional parallell two-channel IDE controller on the motherboard - IDE first channel hda+hdb, second channel hdc+hdd, SATA /dev/hde...
