sudo <command to be run as root>
or
sudo -s , which will provide a shell

note though that you will have to be setup in the sudoers file for this to work
man sudo should give you enough information :-)

You can switch to root using "su -" or if you do not want to inherit roots path and other settings, simply use "su".

Cool

Use editor <VIM, nano...> and comment, uncomment, add lines, change lines to the required file<s>. Be sure to save the data/files after correction. Otherwise the reboot will not save the changes.

press ALT +CTRL+LF1 or F2

the root user deny is the most hatred thing i feel in Ubuntu and other debain based distros..
but u ca bypass this wen u install the distro..
but now u can do thse
siwch to other terminal like pressing ALT+CNTRL+F1..
then login as root
and do watevr u need..
and save..it
i found one another prob with Vi editor in Debian etch.. it canot insert or edit files..
so i am suing Nano instead of it.

If you use kdm to login you can simply enable root login by editing the file /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc and set root_logging to true.

While this is true it's and a "solution" to the immediate problem
(the user wants to login to the GUI as root) it's bad practice to do
so in the first place, shouldn't be encouraged and shouldn't be
necessary, either. Just use e.g.
kdesu kate
or
kdesu konqueror
if you're unable to do stuff in the command-line.

Cheers,
Tink
