Question RH8 to RH9 upgrade, now GNOME kaput

I updated from RH8 to RH9. Upgrade went fine, I thought. When I booted I noticed that there was no text on the greeter screen. I went ahead and logged in, and found that the icons appear as normal but no text below them, and none on the rollover flags. Also, the menus are abbreviated when brought up from the "Redhat" icon on the taskbar.

I noticed that when I have a command prompt open and try to initiate some applicatons, such as up2date, it throws the following error many times:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cannot load module /usr/lib/pango/1.2.0/modules/pango-basic-xft.so: /usr/lib/pango/1.2.0/modules/pango-basic-xft.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And when the GUI comes up, no text on the windows or buttons. I then decided to find the file it referenced, and lo and behold, /usr/lib/pango/1.2.0/modules is not there, but /usr/lib/pango/1.1.0/modules IS there. I tried to download the latest pango rpm to fix this, and then got

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
rpm: error while loading shared libraries: librpm-4.2.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, now I am wondering if some packages that were supposed to load from the CDs did not for some reason. I have used the CDs on 2 other machines that work flawlessly, so I know the media is good. What I don't know is how to repair rpm and get it working so that I can update other packages and get around these sort of problems.

Thanks for any help that you can lend.

Keith

first thought is that you didn't update to the new version of RPM. Get that and try the pango rpm again.

rpm -Uvh rpm-4.2-1.i386.rpm

I'm pretty sure thats gonna be the version you need.

Question Is there a way to get it in .tar format?

Since rpm is not working, I cannot use rpm to repair it. Is there a site that you know of that as a .tar version of the files that I can make and install? Thanks for your help.
