Unhappy RH8 to RH9 upgrade, GNOME desktop text missing

I upgraded my working RH8 version to RH9, and everything seems to have gone fine, but now my greeter and GNOME desk have no text visible anywhere. Applications that I lauch look fine, and VMWare sessions look normal, but no desktop text on the desk itself or in the description flags during mouse rollovers. Also, any panel that I initiate from the menu is affected similarly.

I checked the font installation, but all config files and directories look like they should.

I have checked several self-help sites and googled the question, but so far no love. If someone knowledgeable could clue me in I would be sincerely grateful. FYI, I first touched linux seriously last Nov., and am still a little wet behind the ears , so I will try to keep up with you

Thanks.

Keith

Try reinstalling Nautilus. This is what Gnome uses to draw the dekstop.

More info for you

Jayakrishnan and Glock Shooter - thanks for the suggestions.

I did indeed try a reinstallation this a.m., selecting all packages, but had the same results.

NEW INFO:> I noticed that when I have a command prompt open and try to initiate some applicatons, such as up2date, it throws the following error many times:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cannot load module /usr/lib/pango/1.2.0/modules/pango-basic-xft.so: /usr/lib/pango/1.2.0/modules/pango-basic-xft.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And when the GUI comes up, no text on the windows or buttons. I then decided to find the file it referenced, and lo and behold, /usr/lib/pango/1.2.0/modules is not there, but /usr/lib/pango/1.1.0/modules IS there. I tried to download the latest pango rpm to fix this, and then got

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
rpm: error while loading shared libraries: librpm-4.2.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, now I am wondering if some packages that were supposed to load from the CDs did not for some reason. I have used the CDs on 2 other machines that work flawlessly, so I know the media is good. What I don't know is how to repair rpm and get it working so that I can update other packages and get around these sort of problems.

Thanks for any help that you can lend.

Similar Program

I am having a similar problem with RH9 and Gnome. I see the desktop with the menus but there are no letters there.

I don't know whether this connects but even when I am running KDE and try to run Evolution or Gnomemeeting, I get a problem with GConf and lock files.

Maybe someone could help both problems.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Hey Rebdi et al -

The solution was a corrupted or half-updated Pango installation. Once I reinstalled a new (upgraded) pango and made sure that calls to it were pointing to the correct location, all of my desktop issues went away. Pango renders fonts and type for the desktop.
